Austria allows price changes only once per day at 12:00 (with downward changes permitted any time), giving consumers a predictable window for cheap refuelling.

Taxes

Mineralölsteuer plus 20% USt. Diesel excise is lower than petrol — diesel remains popular.

When prices dip

Just before the daily 12:00 reset (overnight and morning) is consistently the cheapest moment to refuel.

Tips

  • Refuel before noon — prices are legally allowed to rise only once per 24 hours, at 12:00.
  • Diskonter chains (Turmöl, Genol, A1) sit 5–10 cents below the major brands.
  • Italian and Slovenian border stations may be cheaper for southern Austria.

Popular brands

OMV, Shell, BP, JET, Eni, Avanti, Turmöl

Guides for Austria

Other European countries

Ways to cut your per-litre cost

Beyond picking the cheapest pump, three approaches change what you actually pay.

Fuel cards

Regular long-distance and cross-border drivers

Settle at a negotiated network price rather than the pump price, and reclaim VAT on foreign fills in one statement.

Watch out: Network coverage varies by country, and some cards carry a monthly or per-transaction fee that outweighs the discount at low mileage.

Supermarket and unmanned stations

Local driving with a station choice within a few kilometres

Unmanned and hypermarket forecourts consistently price below motorway and branded sites in the same area.

Watch out: A detour costs fuel too — the /detour calculator shows when the trip is worth it.

Part-electric running

Predictable commutes with home or workplace charging

Cost per 100 km on home electricity is typically well below diesel or petrol at current European pump prices.

Watch out: Public rapid charging can cost as much as fuel; the saving depends on where you charge, not on the car alone.
