Spain has more than 12,000 fuel stations and prices are reported daily to the Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica. Independent “low-cost” stations (Plenoil, Petroprix, Ballenoil) regularly undercut majors by 10–20 cents.
Taxes
Impuesto Especial sobre Hidrocarburos plus 21% IVA. Diesel carries a slightly lower excise rate than Euro 95.
When prices dip
Prices in Spain change less aggressively than in Germany — Monday and Tuesday usually offer the best rates of the week.
Tips
- Low-cost unmanned stations require credit/debit card payment but are clean and reliable.
- Andalucía and Extremadura tend to have the lowest national averages; the Balearic and Canary Islands the highest.
- Many supermarket stations (Carrefour, Eroski, Alcampo) offer member discounts of 5–8 cents.
